I stood on the stone steps, watching my little girl at the water’s edge. Dressed in her bright‑red ethnic costume, she leaned forward, eyes fixed on the slow‑flowing river. Gentle ripples spread across the green water. A light wind brushed her hair.
She stepped carefully down the wet stone slab, curious about the running water. I held my breath, ready to step forward at any moment. One wrong move and she might slip into the cool river. Yet she paid no attention to danger. All her mind was on the water before her.
She bent down, stretching out her small hand, trying to touch the passing waves. Every time the water brushed her fingertips, she drew back quickly, then laughed softly and tried again. The old town lay quiet behind us. Tourists wandered far away along the riverbank. For her, the whole world narrowed down to this stretch of river.
I did not call her back right away. I just stood and observed. In this moment, she was not in a hurry to visit sights or take photos. She simply enjoyed this small, simple joy. Her red clothing stood out sharply against grey stones and green water.
Slowly I walked close. I placed my hand gently on her shoulder. “Be careful, the stones are slippery,” I said softly. She turned her head and smiled at me, cheeks glowing. Reluctantly, she pulled her hand away from the river.
Many moments of travel fade quickly from memory. But this quiet scene by the river stays deep in my heart. It is not grand scenery, just a little girl happily playing with water. These small warm seconds make our family trip special.
